Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 491 / 189 / 190)
To apply for this visa, the first step is to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI).
With a minimum of 65 points, you are eligible to apply. However, invitations are issued based on the highest-ranking applicants, meaning the higher your points, the greater your chances of receiving an invitation.
Points Breakdown
Age
18–24 years: 25 points
25–32 years: 30 points
33–39 years: 25 points
40–44 years: 15 points
English Language Ability
Competent English: 0 points (IELTS 6 / PTE 50)
Proficient English: 10 points (IELTS 7 / PTE 65)
Superior English: 20 points (IELTS 8 / PTE 79)
Work Experience (Relevant to Australian Standards)
Outside Australia:
3 years: 5 points
5 years: 10 points
8 years: 15 points
In Australia:
1 year: 5 points
3 years: 10 points
5 years: 15 points
8 years: 20 points
Education
PhD: 20 points
Bachelor’s degree or higher: 15 points
Diploma / trade qualification: 10 points
Additional Qualifications
Australian Master by Research or PhD (STEM fields): 10 points
Study in Australia (minimum 2 years): 5 points
Professional Year Program (Accounting / ICT / Engineering): 5 points
NAATI community language certification: 5 points
Study in regional Australia: 5 points
Partner Points
Partner with skill assessment + English: 10 points
Partner with Competent English only: 5 points
Single applicants: 10 points
Important Notes
Ensure your occupation is listed on the Skilled Occupation List
Your skills and work experience must match Australian standards
When you receive an invitation, your points must remain the same or higher (cannot decrease)
Work experience must be relevant to your nominated occupation
Make sure your age and personal circumstances remain unchanged, as this may affect your points
Prepare all documents in advance and ensure they are up to date
Once invited, you will have 60 days to submit your application
